A startup company affiliated with NANOTEC, NSTDA, is showcasing innovations in nano-coating technology that support teak artworks exhibited during Bangkok Design Week 2023 on Bangpho Wood Street, Soi Prachanarumit, Bangpho. This revolutionary work preserves the original texture while extending the reach of innovation into the realm of art. It encourages artists to display their creations with limitless creativity.

Dr. Tanyakorn Muangnapoh, a researcher from the Nano Coating Innovation Research Team at the National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC) and Managing Director of Nano Coating Tech Co., Ltd., explained that the research team leverages their knowledge and experience in nano-coating technology to create coatings suitable for diverse applications.
"We received a request from Mr. Jennarong Takumi Saka, the project manager of 'Bangpho Wood Street: A Living Legend,' and Dr. Kullachate Muangnapoh, a researcher at the National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC), NSTDA, who coordinated the highlights of Bangkok Design Week 2023. These highlights involve wood artworks that require a specific coating," said Dr. Tanyakorn.

Dr. Kullachate, as a coordinator, noted the organizers' interest in applying this coating to two prominent wood artworks: 'Balance in Space' and 'The Life of Wood.' These artworks are crafted from teak with distinctive wood patterns. The artists, who own these pieces, require a coating to safeguard them from dust and water during the outdoor exhibition on Bangpho Wood Street, Bangpho. The desired finish for the teak wood is matte, preserving its natural appearance. Previous attempts with other coatings resulted in an undesirable glossy finish. Moreover, the traditional coating process was time-consuming compared to the efficient spray coating method enabled by nano-coating.

This innovative nano-coating formula is specially developed to adjust the water contact angle on materials, offering protection against dust and water. When water, oil, or other liquids come into contact with the surface, they form droplets that roll off, reducing and removing dust and dirt without leaving water stains. Dr. Tanyakorn highlighted that after applying the nano-coating, the treated teak surface retains its wood grain appearance, achieving the desired matte finish. Additionally, the coating enhances waterproof properties and increases dust resistance. This feature holds significant interest for entrepreneurs in the woodworking industry, leading to inquiries about applying the coating to other wood types for commercial use.
